Interesting, deeply lobed foliage appears red in spring, bright green in summer and yellow or brown in fall. Yellow to brown fertile fronds remain vertical throughout the winter months. Spreads slowly through spore dispersal and quickly through shallow rhizomatous growth. Thrives in wet conditions but will also grow in drier shade. In the right conditions, it will form a dense ground cover, but can be easily thinned out to control spread.
Ecological Importance: This plant thrives in wet meadows, swamps, streambanks, moist woodlands and marshes and provides shelter for salamanders and frogs. Wild turkeys feed on the fertile spore stalks in the winter and it is the host plant for the sensitive plant borer moth. Colonies of sensitive fern help enhance soil moisture retention, reduce surface temperature and process contaminants in the soil - all of which support biodiversity.
Sun Exposure: Full sun, Partial Shade, Shade
Soil Moisture: Medium-Wet, Medium
Height: 2-3 ft
Available in a 4” pot.
