Its pollen is distributed by insects, not wind, so will not bother those with fall allergies. Preferring full sun or partial shade, this plant will grow best in wet or medium-wet soil but will adapt to average conditions once established.
The late season flowers provide much needed nectar and pollen for native bees, including bumblebees and leaf-cutter bees, and nectar for butterflies, including migrating monarchs. The blackberry looper moth, and a few borer moth species use this as a host plant in their caterpillar stage. Many birds feed on the rich seeds over winter months, including chickadees and juncos, and some bee species will use plan parts for nesting material. In riparian zones, it contributes to soil stabilization and erosion protection.
