Verbena hastata / Blue Vervain

from $4.00

With tall spikes of purple/blue flowers, this plant adds dramatic vertical structure to the landscape. It prefers wet to medium-wet soil but will adapt to drier soils once established, and will grow in full sun to part shade. It can get tall and weak-stemmed if it grows too quickly, so planting some supportive plants like swamp milkweed nearby will help it stand tall. It can be susceptible to powdery mildew, but though it can be unsightly, it is harmless.

A popular plant with bees, it also attracts and supports butterflies like yellow swallowtails and monarchs, and moths, hummingbirds and hummingbird moths. It is a host plant for a number of moth species in their caterpillar stage, including the verbena moth and the Virginian tiger.

Sun Exposure: Sun, Partial Shade

Soil Moisture: Medium-Wet, Medium, Medium-Dry

Height: 4 ft

Bloom Time: Summer to Early Fall

Bloom Colour: Purple/Blue

Available in a 4” or one gallon pot.
